Do I need planning permission?

This page gives guidance for exemptions to dwelling houses only, not flats, businesses or commercial properties.

Planning permission is required for most forms of development. There are some minor forms of development that do not require planning permission and these are usually referred to as “permitted development” (PD).

The general guidance can be found on the appropriate links below, but there are other factors that may need to be considered such as is the property listed, in a conservation area, covered by an Article 4 Direction only found in conservation areas or had its “Permitted development rights” removed.

This page is intended for guidance only, if you put your proposal in writing or complete and return the Householders enquiry form to the Planning Helpdesk we can advise you if planning permission will be required for the proposed works.

Many home owners find it useful to write in, even though they know that planning permission is not required, so they have written confirmation from the Planning Department for their own piece of mind, should they have to sell the property at a later date.
