Clinical waste is a term used to describe any waste which poses a threat of infection to humans. The term also includes some drugs or other pharmaceutical products. It does not include nappies, medicines, incontinence pads and one use plasters.
Clinical waste is mainly produced by hospitals, health clinics, doctors' surgeries and veterinary practices, but also arises from residential homes, nursing homes and private households.
Examples of clinical waste include:
- blood or other bodily fluids;
- drugs or other pharmaceutical products;
- excretions;
- human or animal tissue;
- swabs or dressings; and
- syringes, needles or other sharp instruments.
There is no charge for removal of clinical waste from domestic properties however to arrange a collection please contact your Primary Care Trust (PCT) or your own Doctor who will give approval and then, in turn, contact us to arrange for the service.
Discarded syringes
If you find any discarded syringes do not pick them up. Please immediately contact the Waste Management Team on 01284 757320 or email: waste.management@stedsbc.gov.uk with their location and we will come and collect them.
Dead animals
If you find any dead animals please immediately contact the Waste Management Team on 01284 757320 or email: waste.management@stedsbc.gov.uk with their location and we will come and collect them.
