Vandalism and criminal damage

Vandalism is an illegal, anti-social activity that creates a negative impression of an area and contributes to people's fear of crime.

Vandalism and associated criminal damage is a concern for all members of the community. St Edmundsbury Borough Council implements measures aimed at preventing vandalism within the area:

  • CCTV
  • Warden
  • Street lighting
  • Working in partnership with other statutory and voluntary agencies

The Community Development Unit (CDU) at St Edmundsbury Borough Council provides advice and information on measures which can be taken by individuals and businesses to deter vandals. Where the vandalism has taken place on public property the council will carry out repairs. St Edmundsbury Borough Council is working as part of the West Suffolk Crime and Disorder Partnership (WSCDRP) to tackle all aspects of anti-social behaviour including vandalism.  An anti-social behaviour coordinator has been appointed by the WSCDRP who collates incidents of anti-social behaviour and works in partnership with other agencies to reduce anti-social behaviour. Further information can be found in the WSCDRP strategy.

All incidents of criminal damage should be reported to the Police:

  • If you see it happening - call 999 immediately
  • If you see it after it has happened or have any information as to who has caused the damage - report it to the Police on 01284 774100

Any repeated locations of vandalism should be reported to the West Suffolk Anti-Social Behaviour coordinator on 01284 774062 or you can pick up a reporting form from Reception at the Borough Offices at Bury St Edmunds or Haverhill (you can remain anonymous).
