What should go in my black bin?
Please see Your guide to recycling (PDF 137Kb) for information. Hazardous waste such as paint, syringes and gas canisters cannot be disposed of in your black bin. Please call us to arrange a special collection of these types of materials.
What happens to my black bin waste?
Currently all domestic black bin waste is transported to transfer stations at Haverhill, Thetford or Red Lodge to be bulked up. It is then transported to either the Milton or Feltwell landfill sites for disposal. The waste that is sent to landfill is unable to decompose properly as it doesn't have any access to air. Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas is produced from the waste which contributes to global warming. Landfill space is in short supply and is an expensive way of disposal. It is important to minimise the waste you put in your black bin.
Why doesn't the council collect side waste with the black bin?
Side waste is any rubbish that will not fit into the wheeled bins provided to you by the council. To encourage residents to correctly separate their waste for recycling we will not collect any excess waste created. Additional household waste can be taken to your local Household waste recycling centre.
How do I minimise smells coming from my black bin?
We recommend that any food waste that is placed in your black bin is immediately wrapped in a sealed bag to minimise any smells coming from your bin and the lid is shut at all times. You may also like to consider home composting as a method for diverting food waste from your bin.
How do I stop flies?
We recommend that any food waste that is placed in your black bin is immediately wrapped in a sealed bag to minimise any smells that will attract flies. Please see Preventing maggots in your black bin (PDF 47 Kb) for more information.
My bin is damaged/split
Periodically wheeled bins may split. If this has happened to one of your bins please contact us and report the damage. A replacement bin will be delivered as soon as it can be arranged.
