Keeping the 'local' in local government
The Boundary Committee for England has suggested two unitary councils should be set up in Suffolk – one covering Ipswich and Felixstowe ('North Haven') and the other covering the rest of the county ('rural' Suffolk). But its proposal pushes Lowestoft out of Suffolk and into Norfolk, which has created a lot of opposition.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Forest Heath District Council and Waveney District Council have come together to put forward an alternative proposal which keeps North Haven but improves the Boundary Committee's 'rural' Suffolk idea. Bring Lowestoft back into Suffolk and three unitary authorities – East Suffolk, West Suffolk and North Haven (PDF 1.2Mb) – would work well.
Local authorities, each with their own local knowledge and experience, would work better with local people, businesses, community groups, parish and town councils to provide locally-designed and delivered services.
Take a look at the new website dedicated to the new proposal www.keepuslocal.net
Visit Suffolk County Council's website for details of its alternative proposal – one unitary in Suffolk – and North Haven's website for more information about the unitary covering Ipswich and Felixstowe.
