Batteries

About 160,000 tonnes of consumer batteries are sold in Europe each year as well as 190,000 tonnes of industrial batteries and 800,000 tonnes of vehicle batteries making a big impact on the environment.

The European Union has agreed to a directive that makes the recycling of batteries obligatory from September 2008. The directive says that a quarter of all used batteries must be collected by 2012 and this will rise to 45% by 2016.

The government are in the process of trying to establish how many batteries are in the waste stream and to look at legislation to divert batteries from landfill. To help with this process we are running a battery collection trial and if successful this may become a permanent addition to the service.

How is this scheme being funded?

The scheme is being entirely funded by the Waste and Resources Action Programme

When are the batteries being collected?

The batteries are collected at the same time as your blue bin. It is important that you do not put the batteries in your blue bin; they must be in the bag provided and left on top of your bin or hanging on the pink hook.

What kinds of batteries are being collected?

The new collection trial accepts AAA, AA, C and D size batteries as well as button, mobile phone, laptop and rechargeable batteries. We will not collect any automotive vehicle batteries.

Where are the batteries being taken?

They are taken to a sorting facility in the West Midlands where almost all of the battery is recycled. This will include the plastic wrapping, the steel container and the black liquid inside.

Where can I get more bags from?

Please contact us if you require any further bags or if your pink hook goes missing. These will be provided free of charge.
