For almost a thousand years Moyse's Hall has looked out over the Market Place of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. It has seen many changes since it was built in 1180 and has had a variety of different uses, including a tavern and a 'gaol'. Currently it's a museum which provides an excellent setting in which to trace the unfolding story of West Suffolk, through displays which range from prehistoric times right through to the present. Moyse's Hall's own story is as rich and varied as the collections which it houses. The pages below invite you to explore this history including those of a grisly murder; visit the pages on the Red Barn Murder to find out more. Please see below to find out what else the museum has to offer: | The museum has themed displays offering opportunities for study and exploration based on: - Local history - Suffolk Regiment, Red Barn Murder
- Social history - Crime and punishment, coinage, death, witchcraft
A temporary exhibition on display throughout 2009 is the 'Women by Women' exhibition. A more permanent exhibition is 'Faces of Time', which shows a variety of clocks and paintings. Moyse's Hall offers a variety of events for children and adults, please see our Museum events pages to find out more. | | Small Attraction of the Year 2005 Award Moyse's Hall was awarded Small Attraction of the Year 2005 (under 100,000 visitors) by the East of England Tourist Board in October 2005. The museum is accessible to all and has introduced taped tours aimed at the partially sighted, guided tours with a Victorian gentleman and produced two new loan boxes for use by schools and other community groups.
