A magnificent Victorian Hall built in 1883 by the Gurteen family and recently refurbished to include facilities for theatre, film, dance, crafts, meetings and exhibitions. The Abbeygate Picturehouse Cinema in Hatter Street is the latest edition to the Cineworld chain showing the pick of Hollywood blockbusters, the latest independent films and foreign language films from all over the world. We also screen live events such as National Theatre productions and Met Operas.
Both screens have been fully refurbished and now have reclining seats and luxury sofas at no extra cost. The screens are both now larger, have up to date sound systems and the ability to show everything from live satellite transmissions to 3D features.
In December 2012 a major refurbishment was completed which includes a restaurant, café and bar.

The Theatre Royal is owned by Greene King Brewery then leased to the National Trust which in turn is leased to Bury St Edmunds Theatre Management Ltd. The property is open to visitors four days a week. As a working theatre you might even get a sneak peak at actors rehearsing or see technicans setting up the stage for the next show!
