Behind the doors and walls of houses in the centre of Bury St Edmunds are delightful gardens – of all sizes – which are open once a year for charity.
This year the Hidden Gardens of Bury will be on Sunday 16 June 2013. As before, the event will raise money for St Nicholas Hospice Care.
The annual event is a treat for garden lovers and a chance to see behind about 30 houses in the historic streets of Bury St Edmunds, laid out in a grid pattern by the monks from the town's 12th Century abbey.
Visitors may be surprised to find fruit and vegetables, greenhouses, ponds, unusual trees, lovely lawns and sunny patios with pots, many of them an oasis of calm.
Several of the garden owners offer teas and refreshments or have plants and produce for sale. The gardens are open between 11am and 5pm and tickets will be available in advance from the Tourist Information Centre on Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, 01284 764667, from Easter.
